One of the biggest events in Australia's horse racing calendar, the Melbourne Cup is the country's richest and most famous horse race. First held in 1961, the race is steeped in tradition and always begins at 15:00 on the first Tuesday in November and is always run over a 3,200M (2 miles) course. But events begin much earlier in the day with the first race of the 10-race programme beginning at 10:20.
Like many of the biggest racing meetings around the world, it's an opportunity to dress up in your finest outfits with flamboyant hats being the order of the day for many women.
