February is derived from the Latin word "februum" which means purification from the the purification ritual called Februa that was held on February 15th in the old lunar Roman calendar. When most people think of February, most often Valentine's Day comes to mind but there is a lot more to this, the shortest month of the year. February is packed with many holidays, famous birthdays and celebrations of historic events around the world. In 2013 the Chinese New Year falls on 10th February and the year of the snake begins. The snake is the sixth sign of the Chinese zodiac that represents wisdom, intelligence and self-control. Lent begins on 13th February and historians believe that the collective disposal of foods in the days leading up to Lent led to the rise of the Carnival, a celebration unlike any other on the planet.
